Mean Girls (2024)

A teen comedy musical
Mean+Girls+%282024%29

Mean Girls returns to 2024 with new actors, dancing, and songs. The movie was released on January 12th. The cast starts with the main characters of the movie, Cady Heron (Angourie Rice), Regina George (Reneé Rapp), Karen Shetty (Avantika), and Gretchen Wieners (Bebe Wood). This movie is based on the 2018 Broadway musical adaptation from the 2004 film.

In the start of the movie, Cady was homeschooled by her mother in Kenya. Her mother decided to move back to the US so Cady could be social with other juniors like her. When Cady steps on campus, she learns about multiple cliques for the first time. Going to her first class, she introduces herself and told the students that she originally lived in Kenya. Her teacher, Ms. Heron, specified that Kenya was in Africa to the class. Cady couldn’t fit in with a clique easily, so she isolated herself in the bathroom stall to eat by herself.

Janis ‘Imi’ike and Damian Hubbard noticed Cady is having a hard time, so they decided to show her the ropes. The duo described the cliques through song. Then, time stopped as Regina George, the head of the popular clique called The Plastics, walked into the cafeteria. Cady is mesmerized by Regina’s powerful presence. The Plastics include Regina George, Karen Shetty and Gretchen Wieners. Karen is “the dumbest girl you’ll ever meet.” Gretchen knows everyone’s secrets, that’s why her hair is so big.

Regina noticed Cady and liked her. Regina invited her to sit with The Plastics for lunch. Unbeknownst to Cady, Janis and Regina’s friendship had gone bad back in middle school. In Cady’s calculus class, she had a crush on Aaron Samuels, which is also Regina’s ex-boyfriend. Janis convinced Cady to be Regina’s friend so she can get revenge on Regina and Cady can get the guy. Things do not go as planned and Cady gets caught up to being the new head of The Plastics. A negative book called the Burn Book was written by The Plastics about the students and teachers. Regina ripped out the pages and scattered them in the hallways in school. In the morning, everyone saw what horrible things were said about them.

A meeting was held in the gym about who wrote this book. No one took the blame. So, Ms. Heron let the students discuss their issues with them and themselves. On the next day, Cady confessed to Ms. Heron that she wrote the Burn Book. As Cady’s punishment, Ms. Heron enters Cady in the Mathletes to compete in a math competition. During this competition, Cady realizes that she lost focus on school when she befriended Regina. Cady and the Mathletes won the competition in the end.

Then they quickly went to the Spring Fling to not miss it. Cady was announced as the Spring Fling Queen. Cady notices how cheap and fragile the tiara was. Cady breaks the tiara and gives a piece to the students in the crowd. Cady made everyone feel special and beautiful.

Overall, I really loved this movie. The songs showed the personality of the main characters. I would see this again for a second time. “Revenge Party” was one of my favorite songs during the movie.

Rating: 8/10
