The soon-to-be-released Snow White movie, coming out on March 21st, has sparked much controversy even before its release. Honestly, it has faced controversy since before there was even a trailer. Now, the question is, is it really worth watching this movie?

To start off, the casting for this movie has been criticized since the first announcement. The woman playing Snow White, Rachel Zegler, has faced criticism for her comments on the original film, as well as for her Colombian descent for a character described as having “skin white as snow.”

Now, there is nothing wrong with her skin color. This part of the controversy can be compared to the reaction when Halle Bailey played Ariel, and it still turned out to be a good movie. Most of the controversy stems from Zegler’s comments, where she mentioned during an interview that the original movie is “dated” and that the prince “literally stalks Snow White.” While this may be seen as true in some aspects of the film, it did not sit well with people who grew up with or just love this Disney classic.

Another spark of controversy comes from the casting of the seven dwarfs, or the lack thereof. As shown in the new trailer, instead of finding actors to play the roles, they decided to use CGI to create the seven dwarfs. Back in 2023, they did have actors to play the seven dwarfs, but this also sparked controversy because they didn’t look like dwarfs. Instead, they just seemed like a group of regular guys who followed Snow White. Even actor Jason “Wee Man” Acuña criticized Disney by saying, “You’re replacing jobs that people could have as little people. It’s for dwarfs. Why are you hiring ‘Snow White and the seven average people?’” Instead of taking his advice and hiring people with dwarfism or just short people in general, they decided to use CGI to create dwarfs that don’t look real in the first place.

Going back to Zegler’s comments on the original movie, instead of following the original plot, Disney has decided to deviate from it. This has sparked worldwide controversy about the story and how it will be changed. The live-action version is supposed to be a modern retelling of the story. Zegler herself has stated that this movie will focus on Snow White’s strength and show her as a more proactive hero than a naïve little girl. It is also known that the prince will not be saving Snow White at all during the film, and it will most likely have a completely different outcome.

While there are many negative aspects of this movie, there are also positive things to be said. There is a significant visual appeal to this movie, and it is being praised for its stunning animation quality. Another good thing is that they will be bringing back many of the songs from the original movie, including popular songs like “Whistle While You Work” and “Someday My Prince Will Come,” as well as some new songs. This movie also promotes many positive messages overall and will always be seen as a fan favorite.

In summary, while this movie has many good parts and messages, there are still many things that will be taken away from the original story, and it most likely won’t be as good as the original.
