The Darnell-Cookman girls’ basketball team is brimming with confidence. Their goal? To win every game. Of course, anything can happen.
While the team’s coach remains unnamed, we do know some of the middle schoolers on the roster. According to Saron, “My first year at Darnell, I wanted to try out for basketball, but I was scared I wouldn’t make the team. This year, when my friend was trying out, I decided to try out too.”
Initially, Saron doubted her chances. She practiced diligently, playing with her two older brothers or with friends after school. The more she practiced, the more confident she became. Eventually, she and her friend tried out the following year, and both secured spots on the team.
The basketball team describes their coach as “really good and chill.” When asked how they balance academics with sports, players offered various strategies. Some prioritize homework immediately after practice, while others complete assignments during other classes or rely on planners. As one player confidently stated, “I’m a queen of time management.”
All the players are determined to win against other schools. But will they make it to the playoffs? We’ll have to wait and see!
