As the new school year begins, seniors at Darnell-Cookman School of the Medical Arts are facing unexpected challenges and opportunities following the removal of the Senior Seminar class. The course, which was designed to help students prepare for college applications and readiness, was discontinued after the teacher decided not to continue.

Students were initially confused when they arrived and saw their schedules, expecting to have the Senior Seminar class. It was only then that they found out the class had been removed, leaving many feeling unprepared for the college application process. Many relied on Senior Seminar to guide them through applications and readiness, and now they are struggling to navigate this important phase on their own.

Abubekar Dula, a fellow 12th grader, expressed his feelings about the situation: “I feel incomplete, like I’m missing out on important information.”

Despite the initial setback, the removal of the class has also led to unforeseen benefits. Students have been placed in different classes that they had not originally chosen, exposing them to new subjects and experiences. While initially frustrating, some students have discovered interests in areas they never considered before.

The diverse range of new classes has provided students with unique learning opportunities and broadened their academic horizons. Some have found new passions and strengths, while others have gained valuable skills that will benefit them in the future.

In response to the challenges, students have come together to support one another. Peer-led study groups and college application workshops have become common, as seniors work collaboratively to ensure everyone is prepared for the next step in their academic journey.

As the school year progresses, Darnell-Cookman seniors continue to adapt and thrive, demonstrating resilience and determination in the face of change. The experience has not only prepared them for college but has also taught them valuable lessons in flexibility and resourcefulness.
